Shammi: Dear Friends,
We are pleased to inform you that we are organising a 6-day Held Space on Community Living, Conflict Transformation and Wellness at Redstone Farm, Panchgani from December 17th to 22nd, 2012. There we will live as a community while we try to walk along with our shared values and at the same time connect across our differences, while living the principles of wellness by working on healthy food and caring for the body.

We will be primarily looking at and learning about two approaches of conflict transformation, Nonviolent Communication (NVC) and Restorative Circles (RC).

The sharing of NVC and RC will have a dynamic structure and will be directed by the context and needs of the group. We will have frequent ‘check-ins’ to know how everyone is doing, which will determine the flow of the day. During our time together, we will also take advantage of moments when the diversity in our community creates situations which are conventionally referred to as conflicts to explore how we can turn them into opportunities for growth and understanding. In other words, how do we hold the paradoxes in our communities gently and work with them to enrich the individual as well as collective energies.

Along with our learning about NVC and RC, I would like to invite people who would enjoy sharing the following three explorations with me:

1. Working with the community. We will be largely taking responsibility of our meals and upkeep of the place. We are planning to experience a slice of community living where we will be living, cooking, farming, composting, laughing, singing, playing and sharing our gifts for six days in at Redstone Farm at Panchgani. We will also see how we can enrich Redstone during our stay.

2. We will try to have simple vegetarian meals with enough fruits, salads and various curries made with steamed veggies. As much as possible we will try to use organic stuff for cooking. If anyone has any needs for food other than this, please let me know beforehand, or during the retreat if some issue arises. I am looking forward to collectively exploring ways to respect different people’s food choices and trying to meet them.

3. We will also follow the biological clock of day and night and see its impact on our bodies. According to Dr. Vijaya Venkat of The Health Awareness Centre, Mumbai, we are genetically programmed to live with 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness. Not following this cycle impacts our hormone cycles and does not give enough time to our body for the repair work which leads to accumulation of toxins in the body which then lead to dis-ease. We would want the lights to be dim at sun down and would want them to be switched off by 8 p.m. Please let us know beforehand if you have any special needs which would make it difficult for you to join us in experimenting with this cycle.

Mona Patrao, who will be our host at the Redstone farm, has agreed to offer the space in the spirit of gift culture. However the farm has to be supported financially for its upkeep. I am also offering to share my learning in the spirit of gift culture, and would prefer to receive whatever financial contributions people can joyfully give instead of putting a price on the value of what I am sharing. It is important to me that everyone be able to to joyfully receive and contribute to such spaces irrespective of their financial resources. The money that is received is not so much to pay for expenses accrued during our time together, as to make it possible for others in the future to have the opportunity to receive these gifts also.

To know more about the processes of NVC and Restorative Circles, see the attachment.

I would like to have a maximum of 15 people participate. Registration will be on first come first serve basis. It would be helpful for me to hear back as soon as possible from you if you are planning on attending.

I need your support to make this a co-created community event. One way that I will need this support is for people to come forward to contribute to the preparations for the gathering, including some to come to Panchgani beforehand and some staying on after the event to help wrap things up.

My invitations is for this gathering to be a co-created intentional space. For me, this means that everyone participating can express their concerns and needs even before we meet at the farm and work together during the retreat to make it happen. Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you would like to bring your kids along with you, or if you have any other special requirements, so we can see if and how the community can support your full participation.

Best Wishes
Shammi Nanda
