Roof top gardening

There is an increasing awareness today about the importance of fresh fruits and vegetables to build immunity and good health, as well as about the harm that chemical fertilisers and pesticides do to our health as well as to the health of the land.

The vegetables and fruits in the market look bright and shiny but we have no way of knowing what chemicals make them look attractive. Processed foods boast of ‘added nutrients’, but how nutritious can dead packaged food be? Gardening at home is a great way to help everyone at home to learn about the goodness of fresh foods – especially children who’s contact with nature is minimal in cities.

Urban Homestead : urban farm by the Dervaes family in California, USA

The Dervaes family in Pasadena, California has converted 1/10 of an acre of urban land from concrete slab to gardens, and grows up to three tons of produce per year right there.

“For over a decade, we have proved that growing ones’ own food can be sustainable, practical, successful and beautiful in urban areas. We harvest 3 tons of organic food annually from our 1/10 acre garden while incorporating many back-to-basics practices, solar energy and biodiesel in order to reduce our footprint on the earth’s resources.”

A company based in Bangalore that installs rooftop gardens to grow organic food, as automated systems that require almost no maintenance after the initial setup. It’s targeted for city-dwellers who don’t have a plenty of time or farming skills. It’s designed to be self-fertilizing from the family’s kitchen waste (wet/food waste and leftovers) and needs watering only once or twice a month. Most activities like daily watering, digging, and use of chemicals have been completely eliminated, while using the best of nature and natural laws.
