Aasvishkaar !! a learning space …


Recently came across the facebook  page of Aavishkaar which is a learning space for young minds to have fun with hands-on science, math, reading, writing and music in a curious and creative way and focus on shifting our educational system from teaching to learning. Working with various schools in the region of kandbari (himachal), AAVISHKAAR  team visits various school promoting practical learning with special emphasis on science and maths and even hosting science fairs or Vigyaan mela’s and are even open for volunteering opportunities.

Why you should take your kids out of school !!


THEY DISAPPEAR FOR HOURS. WHEN THEY RETURN, THEIR BASKETS ARE HEAVY WITH SMALL TREASURES OF THE WORLD AND THEIR HEADS ARE FULL OF SMALL STORIES OF THEIR WANDERING: THE MOOSE TRACKS THEY SAW, THE FORKED MAPLE THEY SAT BENEATH TO EAT SNACKS.

This phrase above mentioned in the article made me remember my childhood days.

It is already obvious that unschooling is radically different from institutionalized classroom learning, but how does it differ from more common homeschooling? Perhaps the best way to explain it is that all unschooling is homeschooling, but not all homeschooling is unschooling. While most homeschooled children follow a structured curriculum.

 

The first incidence of compulsory schooling came in 1852, when Massachusetts required communities to offer free public education and demanded that every child between the ages of 8 and 14 attend school for at least 12 weeks per year. Over the next seven decades, the remaining states adopted similar laws, and by 1918, the transition to mandated public education was complete and from there on it spread to world.

With recent rise in awareness about compulsory education, several movements and people have risen up to the challenge to provide better model of education for our people, making industrial model obsolete.

Bhoomi College has been an idea, a dream in seed form for a long, long time. It continued to grow through the Prakriya Green Wisdom School, where in subtle and tangible ways they continued to work on building consciousness about ecologically wise living.
In 2007, a group, began working on an Earth Citizenship seminar and then went on to organizing conferences on Food, Health and Climate Change(2009) and on The Good Life (2011). As Bhoomi Network this group expanded, and after 2 years of bringing out the Bhoomi magazine and organizing several programmes on Inner and Outer Ecology, they are now a formal college as well.

Around the world, education systems have become commercialized ‘businesses’ which serve to stratify society, glorify militarism, devalue local knowledge systems and languages, manufacture unsustainable wants, breed discontent and frustration, stifle creativity, motivation and expression, and dehumanize communities. The 19th-century model of factory-schooling today stands in the way of building organic learning societies for the 21st century.

Swaraj University was designed and birthed in 2010 as a two year learning programme for youth. The focus of the programme is on self-designed learning and on green entrepreneurship, including exploration of basic business skills within the context of ecological sustainability and social justice. Each person’s learning programme and curriculum is individualized according to his/her specific talents, questions and dreams. There is ample scope for learners to develop a multidisciplinary curriculum. We have developed and tested various learning materials and activities for self-designed learning. There is a strong focus on apprenticeship learning, leadership development and community living. In the area of community living, learners explore healthy and sustainable personal lifestyle choices, gift culture, co-creation and democratic decision-making. Decisions regarding day-to-day functioning is done through the form of consensus, with a space for each person in the Swaraj community, be that learner or facilitator, to express his/her voice.

In 1965 a young post graduate student, SANJIT “BUNKER” ROY volunteered to spend the summer working with famine affected people in Palamu District Bihar, now Jharkhand, one of the poorest of India’s states. His urban elitist upbringing had distanced him from poverty and destitution. This experience changed him, and formed the determination to fight poverty and inequality. It became his mission. The idea of the SWRC (Social Works and Research Centre), Tilonia emerged from these concerns.

Syamantak – School without walls


Syamantak’s “School without walls” is a center for experiential learning at Dhamapur village in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra, India. Inspired by Dr.Srinath Kalbag,a scientist turned educationist,we formulated a residential commune of students. A process of organic learning run by the students for the students. “School Without Walls”, may appear to others as vocational education, but is not. What we are aiming at is not vocational education, but education using real life activities as a medium. Students at  benefits from the way they learn things – by actually doing them.This is not something they learned in their school or college. Our emphasis is on learning while doing in real life. We believe that working with your hands is what teaches you best

Our education is related to our Mother Earth & nobody should be forced to leave his village for bread, butter & education. None should be detached from his Mother soil for the sake of keeping body and soul together. We had, in days of yore, excellent architects,super human, medical men,amazing space walkers, all that in villages. None of the great that time had to leave their villages. WHY NOW? We need not go to foreign countries or metros for higher education.
